Middle Ages

A long time ago in Europe, there was a period called the Middle Ages. It lasted from around the year 400 to the year 1400. This time came after the fall of the Roman Empire. It ended when new ideas and discoveries started changing Europe.

The Middle Ages began when the Roman Empire fell apart. Many different tribes moved into Europe and created new kingdoms. Some people from the east and north invaded these lands. The church became very important during this time. Monks built monasteries and taught people about religion. A strong family called the Franks ruled a large empire for a while.

The middle part of the Middle Ages was a time of growth. More people were born and farms produced more food. People started trading with each other more. Knights and nobles ruled over regular people called peasants. Peasants had to work on the nobles' land and give them money. The church split into two different groups that disagreed with each other. Wars called the Crusades happened when Christians fought to control holy places.

The last part of the Middle Ages was very hard. A terrible sickness called the Black Death killed many people. About one third of all Europeans died from this disease. There was also hunger and fighting between kingdoms. People started to question the church and its leaders. But new ideas about art, science, and learning began to grow.

By the end of the Middle Ages, Europe was changing fast. New inventions and discoveries were starting. This led to the modern world we know today. The Middle Ages had lasted over a thousand years and shaped how Europe became what it is now.
