London is the capital city of England. It is also the largest city in the United Kingdom. About 9 million people live there right now. The area around London is even bigger. About 15 million people live in the wider London area.
London sits on a river called the Thames. This river is in southeast England. The river flows all the way down to the North Sea. People have lived in London for almost 2,000 years. The Romans built the first big settlement there long ago. They called it Londinium. Today, that old part is still called the City of London.
London grew very fast during the 1800s. It became the biggest city in the whole world back then. Today, London is still one of the most important cities on Earth. Many famous schools and colleges are there. Over 500,000 students study in London's schools. Lots of visitors come to London every year. It is the most visited city in Europe.
You can see amazing places in London. The Tower of London is very old and famous. Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament are there too. Tower Bridge is a beautiful bridge that opens up. Buckingham Palace is where the King lives. The London Eye is a giant wheel you can ride on. There are museums with dinosaurs and art. There are theaters where people perform plays and musicals.
London is home to people from all over the world. People speak over 300 different languages there. The city has hosted the Olympic Games three times. This happened in 1908, 1948, and 2012. No other city has done this before. London is truly a special and exciting place.
