Tokyo

Tokyo is the capital of Japan. It is the biggest city in Japan. More than 14 million people live there. The area around Tokyo has about 33 million people living in it.

Tokyo sits by the ocean at Tokyo Bay. It is on the biggest island in Japan called Honshu. Tokyo is where the leaders of Japan work and make decisions. The Emperor of Japan also lives there. The city has special areas inside it. One area called Chiyoda has important government buildings. Another area called Shinjuku is the center where the city runs from. Shibuya is a busy place where many people shop and work.

Long ago, Tokyo was called Edo. It was just a small fishing village. In 1603, it became very important. By the 1700s, it had grown into one of the biggest cities in the world. In 1868, the Emperor moved to Edo from another city. They changed the name to Tokyo, which means Eastern Capital. Tokyo was badly damaged by an earthquake in 1923. It was also bombed during World War II. After the war, Tokyo was rebuilt very quickly. This helped Japan's economy grow very strong.

Tokyo has done amazing things. It was the first Asian city to hold the Olympics in 1964. It held the Olympics again in 2021. Many important companies have their offices in Tokyo. Tokyo has a super fast train called the Shinkansen. Shinjuku Station is the busiest train station in the whole world. Tokyo Skytree is the tallest tower in the world.

Tokyo makes a lot of money for Japan. About one fifth of all Japan's money comes from Tokyo. Tokyo is one of the richest cities in the world. It is a safe city where many people want to live.
