Dolphin

A dolphin is a mammal that lives in the water. There are about forty different kinds of dolphins in the world. Some dolphins live in oceans, and some live in rivers. Dolphins are related to whales and are part of the same family as whales.

Dolphins come in many different sizes. The smallest dolphin is about as long as a tall person and weighs as much as a grown man. The biggest dolphin is the orca, which is as long as three school buses parked end to end. Male dolphins are usually bigger than female dolphins. All dolphins have smooth, fish-like bodies with flippers instead of arms. Their tail is flat and helps them swim very fast. Some dolphins can swim as fast as a car driving on a highway. Dolphins have sharp teeth that help them catch fish and other sea animals. They can hear very well in water and use special clicks and whistles to find their food. Dolphins have a thick layer of fat under their skin that keeps them warm in cold water.

Dolphins live in many places around the world. Most dolphins like warm water, but some live in cold water. Dolphins eat fish, squid, and shrimp. The biggest dolphins, like orcas, hunt larger animals such as seals and sharks. Male dolphins have babies with many females, but female dolphins only have babies every two or three years. Baby dolphins are born in spring and summer. Mother dolphins take care of their babies for a long time and teach them how to survive.

Dolphins are very smart and friendly animals. They live together in groups called pods. These groups change size all the time as dolphins come and go. Dolphins talk to each other using clicks and whistles. They use these sounds to find food and talk with other dolphins.

Some people hunt dolphins in certain parts of the world, which is very sad. Dolphins also get hurt by fishing nets and pollution in the ocean. People around the world love dolphins because they are beautiful and smart. Some dolphins live in special parks where people can see them, but many people think wild dolphins should stay free in the ocean.
